While at North Central, Carius’ teams have won 16 national titles, finished runner-up 15 times and won 41 consecutive College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Cross Country Championships.

These accomplishments have come with much recognition in the track world.  Carius was honored as cross country “Coach of the Century,” as well as being named NCAA Division III Cross Country Coach of the Year in 1993, 1995, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2014. He is also a member of the Illinois Track and Cross Country Coaches Hall of Fame, the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame, the Chicagoland Sports Hall of Fame and the Drake Relays Hall of Fame.

On top of his individual accomplishments, Carius and his coaching staff have produced 113 All-Americans and seven individual national champions in cross country and more than 400 All-Americans and 55 national champions in track and field. In addition, North Central athletes still hold six national records.

Champion of Community

"It's very satisfying to look back and see what we have accomplished here, but there is so much more to it," Carius said via "I think at every place you try to find young men with talent, but also with character which you can continue to develop."

Carius strives to coach his athletes from the inside out. This means coaching athletes’ spirits and hearts. Carius does this by asking, “What can the sport do to help the athlete become a better person?”

Carius sees sport as a living education that teaches athletes characteristics necessary to succeed and impact their community off the playing surface. Sport teaches commitment, discipline, motivation, teamwork and how to deal with success and failure.

Instilling character in athletes makes Carius a Champion of Community. Carius’ focus on fostering talented athletes and inspiring individuals has brought success and education to the North Central track program and college community.
