August 15, 2014 – Spanish cities will be promoted to millions of people across the globe during the upcoming 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Spain thanks to specially-designed courts created by Connor Sports.
The flooring provider, which is an Official Technical Supplier to basketball’s global governing body FIBA, has designed custom-made temporary courts for all six of the host cities during the tournament, which will take place from August 30 to September 14.
All six courts will carry the name of the particular host city in large lettering and a unique colour scheme.
The striking branding will be clearly visible to an anticipated total television audience of 800 million viewers in 171 countries, providing tremendous exposure for the host cities of Barcelona, Bilbao, Granada, Gran Canaria, Madrid and Seville.
The personalised QuickLock wooden courts have been provided by Connor Sports at no costs to the host cities, and the temporary courts have been installed within existing venues and can be dismantled and relocated after the tournament to maximise legacy opportunities.
“All eyes will be on six Spanish courts during the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup, and the unique design of each court will project the brand of each host city to a worldwide audience including potential visitors and holidaymakers,” Connor Sports CEO Ron Cerny said.
“Studies have shown that major sporting events can boost tourist numbers after a tournament has finished, and we hope that our specially-created courts can help the host cities to benefit in various ways for many years to come.
“The courts all carry different city branding, but they are identical in technical performance and safety to assure a consistent playing surface for what will be the best basketball tournament in the world.
“We have provided cost-effective courts for top sports teams in the United States and around the world, but we are particularly proud to have been asked by FIBA to create the custom-made flooring in Spain. We hope the locals like them and are proud to see their city’s name placed under the global spotlight.”
Jose Luis Saez, President of the Spanish Basketball Federation, added: “This is a great opportunity for the six cities hosting the FIBA Basketball World Cup to achieve a high level of visibility around the world.”
Connor Sports has worked alongside Schelde Sports, a division of fellow FIBA Technical Supplier JF International, which has created custom-made basketball net backdrops for the six different venues to complement the colour scheme on the flooring.
Connor Sports, which is part of Connor Sports Court International, has been a FIBA Equipment and Venue Centre Partner since 1994 and is the Official Technical Supplier of FIBA from 2013 to 2016.
